FIRE AND RESCUE ACADEMY

Course Description

The Fire/Rescue Cadet Program is a one-year program, offered only at the Career and Technology Center, that provides juniors and seniors with training and experience for future employment in the fire and rescue service or its allied professions. The program includes classroom instruction, hands-on activities and field experiences at selected agencies related to the fire and rescue services. (Class may run until 3:00 on practical session days.)

Courses are a cooperative effort between the county school system and the Frederick County Fire and Rescue Association. In addition to earning course credit, students who pass the externally developed examinations have the opportunity to receive certification as a Firefighter II and as an Emergency Medical Technician.

All applicants will be interviewed by a committee with consideration given to the following criteria:

1. Must be a Frederick County high school 11th or 12th grader by the first day of class.

2. Must be an active member of a Frederick County fire and/or rescue department before the first day of class.

3. Must be at least 16 years old by the first day of class.

4. Must be able to provide your own transportation, when required. Students will be driving at specified times between the Career and Technology Center and the home school and fire/rescue experience sites.

5. Must have successfully completed all Maryland Functional Tests.

6. Must have a positive recommendation from the chief of the student’s fire/rescue company. This program includes at least 30 hours of community service during school time and provides training related to additional community service time. Some students’ training and activities will occur off campus and may include hazardous situations. Enrollment is limited to 25 students, and admission interviews may be required.

(Student application process required. See your counselor.)
