Course Description
Criminal Justice is a two year program, offered only at the Career and Technology Center, is an introduction to the three components of the United States Criminal Justice system. This course will allow students to form a strong foundation in the understanding of law enforcement, courts, and corrections. Students will not only learn Maryland Motor Vehicle law, Criminal Law, Constitutional Law, Constitutional Amendments which apply directly to Criminal Justice, and criminal sanctions, but they will apply this knowledge when performing “hands on” scenarios. First year students will learn much from text and law books, and will perform minor scenarios. Second year students will do more research work, as well as, conduct full investigations starting from the initial call for service and take their investigation all the way through a mock trial. Students must possess effective communication skills to be successful in this program. Students will also have the opportunity to compete in the following competitions: SkillsUSA Criminal Justice, SkillsUSA Crime Scene Investigation, and Maryland State Bar Association/CLREP Mock Trials.
For exemplary students, there is the possibility of becoming a third year “Extended Tech” student. The criteria to become an “Extended Tech” student are (1) complete the two year Criminal Justice program, (2) have an A average both years and (3) maintain a 95% attendance rate.
An articulation agreement providing college credits for successful completion of this program has been established with Frederick Community College. Students who successfully complete one year of the Criminal Justice program at CTC can earn 1.5 college credits when attending FCC. Students who successful complete two years of the Criminal Justice program at CTC can earn 3 college credits when attending FCC. An articulation agreement to offer even more college credits through Frederick Community College is being developed.
