PRINCIPLES OF CARPENTRY

This two year program offered only at the Career and Technology Center, introduces students to the exciting and diverse opportunities in the construction industry. Available in year long or semesterized options the Carpentry program is open to 10 th, 11 th, and 12 th grade students who are interested in learning many of the skills required in the field of carpentry, including blueprint reading, construction methods, material estimating, work ethics, and safety. Extensive instruction is given in the appropriate and safe use of numerous power tools and their applications in the field. Students explore career opportunities and specializations within the construction industry such as construction supervisor, estimator, carpenter, contractor, architect and engineer. Student skills competition and leadership development is provided through participation in the SkillsUSA student organization at the local, state and national levels.

The Carpentry Program utilizes curriculum that was developed by the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) and is nationally accredited and internationally recognized. The program is approved by the Federal Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training and its standards are approved by the Maryland Department of Labor. The curriculum is sponsored by the Cumberland Valley Association of Builders and Contractors (ABC).

Students are encouraged to invest approximately $125-$175 in the following hand tools and personal safety items to be used in the program: For students and parents who are concerned about the ability to provide these items because of financial constraints, please contact the instructor regarding options.
