The Biomedical Sciences program at the Career & Technology Center is a two year program developed by Project Lead the Way, Inc. consisting of four semesters of interrelated courses. The goal of the program is to provide rigorous and relevant project and problem-based curriculum intended to engage students, prepare them for college, and provide them with training for careers associated with the biomedical sciences. Careers associated with these courses include physician, nurse, veterinarian, scientific and pharmaceutical researcher, therapist and lab technician. The program is open to 11th and 12th grade students.
First Year Curriculum
- Principles of the Biomedical Sciences
- Human Body Systems
Second Year Curriculum
- Medical Intervention
- Science Research
Principles of Biomedical Science, Unit 1, introduces students to the biomedical sciences through the use of hands on projects and a problem oriented approach to study human medicine, research processes and bio informatics. Key biological concepts and engineering principles lay the scientific foundation necessary for student success in subsequent courses
Human Body Systems, Unit 2, engages students in the study of basic human physiology. Students use specialized software to design and build systems to monitor bodily functions.
The third unit, Medical Intervention, provides students with the opportunity to investigate various medical interventions that extend and improve quality of life, including gene therapy, pharmacology, surgery and prosthetics. Students will design and build a model of a therapeutic protein.
The capstone course, Science Research, gives students the opportunity to work with a mentor, identify a science research topic, conduct research, write a scientific paper and defend team conclusions and recommendations to a panel of outside reviewers.
Graduates of this program are encouraged to go on to post-secondary education at a two or four year school in a science or health oriented program.
Mathematics, particularly algebra, and a strong life science background are recommended for success in this program.
Students who are accepted to the program are required to supply:
- Closed toed shoes (tennis shoes are acceptable) for lab (to be kept in a school locker)
- 3 inch binder, dividers
- Sincere desire to learn
- Positive attitude
For students/parents who are concerned about the ability to provide these items because of financial constraints, please contact the instructor regarding options
