May 2007

Two teams from Academy of Finance I placed 1 st & 2 nd in the Maryland Central Region of the Junior Achievement’s Banks in Action Competition.

March 2007

The Academy of Finance proudly recognizes the 1 st place Maryland State winners in the SkillsUSA Leadership Contests. After winning in the local contests, seven students went on to compete at the State level. Six of those students won top-three honors. Kate Meagher (Customer Service) and Nas Abdulghaney (Job Interview) earned the right to compete at Nationals.

State Economics Challenge Mar 2007 2nd placeStudents in the Academy I class placed 2nd in the State Economics challenge in the David Ricardo Division.

 

 

 

September 2006
Studen & Advisory Board recognized by Office of Economic Development Students and Advisory Board members were recognized by the Office of Economic Development during Business Appreciation Week.

Academy students represented CTC at the Maryland State Skills USA Leadership contests. Five of the six placed in the top three and Frank Weller, who placed first in Extemporaneous Speech, competed in July at the national level in Kansas City. Students in the Academy have placed in the top three every year since the program began.

Volunteer Frederick, a non-profit organization which inspires, strengthens, and supports volunteerism in Frederick County by connecting people with opportunities to serve, building service partnerships, and training volunteer programs managers recognized Academy I students at its annual Youth Volunteer Recognition Ceremony. These students volunteered more than 160 hours during the school year at Downtown Frederick Partnership events.

At a MSDE/Citigroup luncheon, Citigroup's Maryland Leadership Council Co-Chairs, Harry Goff, President of CitiFinancial, and Michael DiSciullo, Site President of Citicorp Credit Services, included in their remarks special recognition of an outstanding financial educator from the Frederick area: Kathy Zepp-Imhoff at the Frederick County Career and Technology Center's Academy of Finance (AOF).   Ms. Imhoff has brought national attention and distinction for her curriculum and students within the National Academy Foundation AOF program.  During the summer, Ms. Imhoff and three of her students were invited to present their capstone project at the National Academy conference held in San Diego, where student Aaron Coaplin was also chosen to present/speak to NAF Coordinators about his two-year experience in Frederick's AOF.

Aaron Coaplin traveled to the National Academy Foundation Summer Institute in San Diego to present his senior capstone project to educators, students, administrators, and business leaders at the three day conference. He was also the speaker at the opening session and addressed the rigor and validity of the Academy curriculum.

Matt Lawton, class of 2001, was honored at the 2005 National Academy Foundation’s Summer Institute in front of more than 1600 educators and business leaders from across the United States. He was named Alumni of the Year for his continued involvement in the local Academy program. Matt currently works for Barclays Capital in New York City.

Improving the academic, social, and physical well-being of students continues to be a top priority of business and school partnerships across the country. In recognition of successful partnership efforts, the Council for Corporate & School Partnerships named Frederick County’s Academy of Finance and its Advisory Board one of six finalists which is making a positive impact on student achievement and educational experiences.

Academy of Finance 2005 graduates Aaron Coaplin and James Berry were named the first-ever winners of the CitiMortgage Scholarship to Mount St. Mary’s University, where both are enrolled. This scholarship will continue yearly.

Second year Academy students competed against 25 other AP Economics teams in the Adam Smith Division of the National Economics Challenge at Towson State University and placed 5th overall.

   October 2004
Teacher Kathy Imhoff was one of four Maryland teachers selected to tour Moscow as part of an exchange sponsored by the National and Maryland Councils on Economic Education and the Center for Economic Education at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. The study tour provided time for U.S. teachers to exchange ideas, methods and experiences in economic education with political, educational and private-sector leaders in Russia.

Second year Academy students participated in “Brush with Frederick” by painting one of 220 spaces along Carroll Creek. The community art project was organized with the hopes of funding future community and art projects in the Carroll Creek Linear Park. All artwork was on display for several months.

Students from the Academy visited Washington to hear Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan address the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs. This is the second time students have had an opportunity to meet with Mr. Greenspan.


   September 2003
The Maryland Bankers Association presented Mrs. Imhoff with the first annual Financial Teacher of the Year Award. With this award also came recognition from the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond and grant monies from M&T Bank.

Students visited Capitol Hill as guests of the Independent Insurance Agents conference. Students had participated in the INVEST Auto Insurance Program and were invited to talk to members about their experiences.

 

 

   February 2003
Frederick County’s Academy of Finance received one of five national awards for its effective collaboration with local businesses. Sponsored jointly by the Employment Management Association Foundation and the Wall Street Journal, the award recognized the school-to-work program that addresses critical areas of employment need, partnerships that contribute to increased work force qualifications, and continued improvement and adaptability to changing business and educational needs. The $5000 cash award went to the AOF. Additionally, Mrs. Imhoff and Advisory Board Chair Dennis Watkins were recognized in the Wall Street and received the award at EMA’s annual conference in San Francisco.

                                                                                                         May 2001
State Farm presents its first annual scholarship to an Academy Junior to pay the tuition for the required Accounting class to be taken at Frederick Community College as part of the Academy curriculum. Each year State Farm has increased its donation and now awards monies to three students.

 

 

   June 2000
Citigroup presents its first grant to the Frederick County Academy of Finance. This grant continues to be renewed annually and helps to pay for enrichment activities and professional development.
